My First, My Last

 Mia and Adrian

❤︎ ❤︎ ❤︎

Fate has kept them apart for twenty years.

Their roads never crossed and the stars failed to align, until now.

It had been twenty years, almost to the day, since I’d seen him on the other side of the world.  So imagine my surprise when the man I’d lost my virginity to stood less than three feet away from me, in a bar, on my girls’ night out.

“Hi, Thumbelina.”

Yup, it was him. No one else had called me by that nickname, ever. And with those two words, my whole world collapsed and rebuilt in an instant.

And no, Thumbelina wasn’t my name. My mother could be crazy at times, but she wasn’t that crazy.

But for the love of God, why couldn’t I remember my name?

“We’ll see the same stars, the same sun and sky, but we’ll still be so far apart.”

I remembered thinking how good it felt to have the universe in common, as if it would somehow connect us. But the universe was even bigger than the world—a world in which we’d been kept apart for twenty years. What was I thinking?

“It’s our universe,” he said as if reading my mind.

“It is ours, isn’t it? And you found me.”

“Every time I looked up into the sky I thought of you, especially the Little Dipper.” He pointed toward the constellation.

“Why the Little Dipper?”

“Because you’re my little Thumbelina, and the Little Dipper is… little.” His voice quivered.

But life now is not as simple as it was twenty years ago.

With two kids, a hopeful ex-husband and new insecurities,  opening to a new relationship  is challenging.

By the time Adrian drove me home, the sun was setting. Between work, kids, and Adrian’s business dealings it would be two weeks before I could see him again, which made saying goodnight that much more difficult.

Fortunately, Adrian returned for good.

And this time we had time and stars on our side.

Sometimes...

“Shit!” I saw him run his hand through his hair and pull on his chin. He sure was acting like it was much more than a flat, and so I stepped out as he just stood there.

“It’s a flat tire,” I confirmed.

“I know.”

“So, let’s change it.”

He lowered his hands to his hips, looked from the front of the car to me, and then back to the car again, uncertainty guiding his every move.

“Don’t tell me you’ve never changed a tire before.”

“I haven’t. Matt has.”

“Your son.”

Adrian shrugged. “He loved these things.”

“Well, then, lucky for us, I have,” I said moving toward the trunk, “My father would change his for winter ones every December, then go back to the regular ones in the spring. I loved watching him work in the garage.” The memory of my dad brought a warm feeling to my chest. “But I’ll need your muscle to help.”

“Hey, you can use me any way you want, T.”

His thumbs gently brushed against my hips. The flex of his arms and that sexy way he had of focusing just on me—really, really looking at me—made me hungry for more than just baked apples.

“There, that’s much better.” He leaned in and kissed me. “Hi, Thumbelina.”

“Hello.”

“Would you like some of my pie?” His brows rose up and down suggestively.

I giggled, suddenly feeling like a teen again, all silly with no responsibilities or worries.

“I would, but I’d like that pie.” I pointed to the oven.

“That’s what I meant; what were you thinking?” He let go of my waist and raised his hands up in innocence.

“You’re up to something.” I said.

“Of course I am. I’m about to get my dessert.”

Adrian was already at my neck, nibbling gently up toward my earlobe. I braced my hands on the counter and leaned my head to the side. The trail of his hot lips flowed down to my cleavage, right into the tip of the V between my breasts. He grazed up toward my earlobe. The touch of his mouth there was so minimal I could feel his lips tickle against the cartilage, tracing the shell of my ear. His hands remained on the counter, testing my patience, because all I truly wanted was to feel them on my body—all over my body.

Only You

Alex and Jackson

“There are a few moments in life when all the pieces fit together, when that second-long perfect timing expands into a lifetime and opens your eyes to possibilities of happiness you could only dream of.” - Lacey Silks

Twenty-four years ago Alex met the love of her life.

Sixteen years ago she was engaged to marry her soulmate.

But Fate had other plans and tore them apart.

“Don’t fucking move!”

“Jackson! Jackson!” Feeling helpless, Alex’s fearful screams on the phone squeezed my heart, and all I wanted to do was to wrap her in my arms and tell her that everything would be okay. I wanted to tell her not to worry, but when a second guy with a black bag came in, even I lost a little faith.

Call the police, baby.

“I’m getting marri—”

“Shut the fuck up!” He hit me on the side of my head, removed some masking tape from his pocket, and slapped it over my mouth.

“Jackson! Jackson, baby, I’m coming!”

I wanted to scream for her not to. I wanted to tell her to stay where she was, but all I could get out were some muffled sounds.

The ordeal was over in less than thirty seconds. Another blow to my head, and I lost consciousness.

After Jackson was kindnapped Adam was the one who saved my life.

He blessed me with two beautiful children and helped me grieve.

I didn’t know how much I missed Jackson until I found out that he was alive and my heart ripped open all over again.

The man whom I’d never stopped loving, was back, and I couldn’t give him the only thing he wanted: me.

But I was married with two kids.

Our second chance had its doors closed.

Our moment was gone and I was no longer his. Love was suffocating me.

I was torn between two lives and no matter what decision I made, somebody would get hurt.

“Are you happy, Alex?”

“In what sense?” I tried to stall. Jackson would see through any lies, and truthfully, I didn’t want to lie to him. We never lied to each other.

“Your marriage.”

“Ahm, yes. I guess. We’re good. I mean, it’s been like ten years already, so the flame obviously isn’t burning as brightly as it did years ago.”

His mouth did that straight line again. “That’s not right. If you were mine, I’d make sure that flame would never fade.”

My heart was beating hard again. I still couldn’t believe that we were here, stealing this moment in time, a moment I’d dreamt about for years, a moment that I was afraid would pass too quickly.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. All I’ve ever wanted was for you to be happy.”

“That’s why you didn’t come back, isn’t it? Because you thought I was happy. You sacrificed your happiness for mine.”

“Yes.”

“How about you? Are you happy?”

“I thought I was. Aidan is my life, so I can’t be unhappy as long as I have him. But then I saw you this morning.”

“And?”

“And it confirmed that my life wasn’t complete. I guess that sometimes you don’t realize what’s missing in your life until you’re sitting next to her. You realize that she’s the one who makes you whole. Now that I know the truth, that you’re married, I can’t lie that the thought of you never being mine again hurts.”

“Alex, does being here with me feel awkward to you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Having me and Adam in the same room.”

“It feels… different. Confusing, I guess.”

He took a step closer and leaned down and over me. “Can you still feel our connection, Alexandra? The way I do?”

His warm breath trailed over my face before flowing down my neck, perfectly teasing my cleavage on its way south.

I nodded.

“It will always be there, and I’m pretty damn sure that it’s something we’ll never be able to erase.”

I didn’t want to erase it.

“Alex, what I’m trying to say is, that if you want me to leave Seattle, if this is too difficult for you, I will.”

“No, you can’t. I’m not losing you again. Yes, of course, it’s difficult. I don’t understand how, after so many years, it’s still possible to have all these feelings that I thought were long gone. I lost you. I grieved for you, and I moved on.” I turned toward him and looked up into his eyes. I still couldn’t get used to looking up so high. “Jackson, I shouldn’t be having these feelings. I’m married.”

“Do you love him?” he asked.

I jerked back, somewhat surprised at his question. I’d supposedly overlooked Adam’s cheating only a few days ago — I had to love him, didn’t I? He was my husband. He was the father of my children. We’d been married for ten years, and I would have never made the decision to make these last few months of his life as happy and comfortable as possible if I didn’t love him – would I? He wouldn’t get another chance. Not from me and not from anyone else. How could all of that have meant nothing?

Except when Jackson mentioned love, someone other than my husband came to mind.

I looked up from underneath my lashes and whispered, “Yes, I do.”

“Right. Then you should do everything you can to concentrate on your marriage. I’m sorry about the kiss… wait… no, actually, I’m not sorry about the kiss, and if I could do it again, I wouldn’t have let you pull away.” He turned around but stopped, twisting to face me again. “I hope it works out for you both, Alex, and I hope that you’re happy. That’s all I want for you. I want you to be happy.”

Astounded, I opened my mouth, then closed it again. Jackson was right, except for one part. I was afraid it would be a long time before I felt happiness in my life again.

Jackson slowly walked toward the door, then stopped once more and turned.

“Let me ask you a question. When I came in here, you were crying; and judging by that stack of soiled tissues by the garbage can, you’d been crying a lot. If it wasn’t about Adam cheating on you, then what was it about?”

He caught me off guard. I bet he knew that I was searching my mind for an excuse. And I couldn’t find one.

“That’s what I thought,” he said.

❤︎ ❤︎ ❤︎

This was it. This was our goodbye. I probably wouldn’t see him again for a while, and my heart ached at the thought. As I watched him walk away from me, I wanted to go back to that couch, curl up, and cry. But I didn’t. Instead, I stared at his back as he said goodbye to the ladies and Lou, and walked out the door, disappearing from my life for the second time.
